Angela Davis speaks at Oranienplatz 06.10.2022 “O-Platz wird 10 – Baustelle Migration” 

International Women* Space is pleased to share with you Angela Davis’ speech at Oranienplatz during the arts and culture festival “O-Platz wird 10 – Baustelle Migration” commemorating 10 years of refugee and migrant occupations of O-Platz and the Gerhart-Hauptmann Schule in Berlin Kreuzberg.

Angela Davis is a political activist, philosopher, academic, scholar, author and above all a revolutionary! When we thought about how we would like to mark the 10 years anniversary of the occupation of O-Platz and the start of our movement, we had the courage to dream of having Angela speak to us, many of us at O-Platz. And because dreaming is free, we went ahead and asked her, and, to our joy, she accepted our invitation.

The speech documented in this video is a lesson on the vestiges of colonialism and enslavement, and a reminder of women*’s power and leadership in struggles around the world. It is a speech about hope and our role as activists in transmitting hope, and it is also a speech about about freedom.

As Angela Davis says, remembering the song “Freedom is a constant struggle”, which is a freedom song that was repeatedly sung in the southern United States during the twentieth century freedom movement.

Pressemitteilung: Pressekonferenz mit Angela Davis am 06. Oktober 2022 auf dem O-Platz

International Women* Space e. V. veranstaltet vom 05.10. bis 09.10.2022 ein Kunst- und Kulturfestival auf dem Oranienplatz, Berlin

Berlin, den 23.09.2022 – Der Verein International Women* Space e. V. lädt ein, die 10-jährige Selbstermächtigungsgeschichte geflüchteter Menschen zu feiern, die in der Besetzung des Oranienplatzes und später dann auch der Gerhart-Hauptmann-Schule in der Ohlauer Straße ihren Höhepunkt fand. Anlässlich dieses Jubiläums wollen wir uns vom 5.10. – 9.10.2022 auf dem Oranienplatz versammeln und die Geschichte des Refugee-Resistance-Movements feiern. 

Mit einer fünftägigen Open-Air-Kunstbaustelle zeigen wir die Geschichte des Refugee-Resistance-Movements und die Facetten der Kämpfe, die auf und um den Oranienplatz geführt wurden. Menschen, die damals wie heute in der Bewegung aktiv sind, werden ein künstlerisches Festivalprogramm gestalten und ihre politischen Forderungen zentrieren.

Im Rahmen des Festivals der International Women Space e. V. wird die Schwarze Aktivistin und Bürgerrechtlerin Angela Davis am 06.10.2022 um 10 Uhr am Oranienplatz gemeinsam mit Aktivistin Napuli Langa und IWS Mitgründerin Jennifer Kamau eine Pressekonferenz zum Thema rassistischer Umgang mit BiPoC Geflüchteten abhalten. Zehn Jahre nach dem Beginn der Besetzung des O-Platzes wollen wir nicht nur unsere Geschichte feiern, sondern auch einen Vorschlag für eine Gesellschaft unterbreiten, die sich als vielfältig, postkolonial, basisdemokratisch und postmigrantisch versteht.

Die Kampagne wird gefördert vom Berliner Projektfonds Urbane Praxis, When Jackal leaves the sun und Kulturstiftung des Bundes – Turn 2.

HINWEIS: Aufgrund der Raumkapazität findet die Pressekonferenz nur für geladene Presse statt. Die Pressekonferenz wird Live gestreamt. Der Talk mit Angela Davis findet am selben Tag um 18 Uhr auf dem Oranienplatz, ohne Anmeldung, für alle Menschen statt.

“The Refugee movement is the movement of the 21st Century” – Angela Davis in Berlin, May 2015

“Can someone explain to me why can’t I go inside the school?” asked Angela Davis on the 14th of May, during her meeting with activists in the Werkstatt der Kulturen, in Berlin. “Is it a school or a prison?” To which people from the audience replied: “Yes”. Angela Davis and Gina Dent wanted to visit the refugee occupied school in the Ohlauer Strasse and were denied access by the District authorities. The day after, on the 15th of May, Angela Davis and Gina Dent met again with refugees and migrants at the Jockel Biergarten. This time to listen, understand and discuss how the struggle for the rights of all people to move freely and have a dignified life is going in Germany.

We, from the International Women Space, were present in both meetings and stressed about the importance of the women’s struggles inside the movement of the people seeking asylum.

Angela Davis and Gina Dent at Werkstatt der Kulturen

panel discussion with Angels Davis and Gina Dent at werkstatt der KulturenThursday, 05/14 Angela Y. Davis and Gina Dent met with antiracist, migrant and refugee activists from Berlin at Werkstatt der Kulturen. The meeting began with Refugee Club Impulse, a film dance and theatre group staging a performance on coming to Europe.
The following discussion was open to everyone. The talk was on cooperation between activists in Europe and the United States, on systemic police violence, racial profiling and the connection between activism and academia.
Davis stressed a contradiction contained in the notion of globalisation. Everything is conceived as moving around the globe freely except for most of the people – especially those in the global south. If they don’t stay were they are, they’ll get labelled as “illegals” – put back into custody.
Explaining how in France they came across many refugee activists, Angela Davis quoted one of them: “The Mediterranean is an African cemetery” and went further on pointing out that the horrors of todays mediterranean sea repeat patterns of the slave trade at the begining of the global economy. Both human tragedies being based on expropriation and exclusion.

Angela Davis wird der Zugang zur Schule in der Ohlauer Straße verweigert

Bezirksstadträtin erlaubt den US amerikanischen Bürgerrechtlerinnen, sich außerhalb der Schule zu treffen.

Die Genehmigung zum Besuch der Schule in der Ohlauer Straße für Angela Davis und Gina Dent wird von der Bezirksstadträtin verweigert.

Am 11. Mai beantragt ReachOut die Genehmigung für einen Besuch der Unterkunft von Geflüchteten in der Ohlauer Straße. Angela Davis und Gina Dent wollten in Begleitung von zehn Aktivist_innen mit den Geflüchteten über ihre Situation und über ihre politischen Aktivitäten diskutieren. Der Besuch der Schule ist ohne eine Genehmigung der Stadträtin, Borkamp nicht möglich, weil der Zugang zur Schule von einem Sicherheitsdienst verhindert wird.
