Statement against sexism – Statement gegen Sexismus

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> deutsch weiter unten >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Berlin, July 24th 2013

Two months ago a woman*,”fidicin”, who experienced a rape in an apartment published her account of the incident on indymedia. In the statement she refers deficient treatment of the assault within the refugee protest structures.1 Fidicin back than was at the same time a supporter of the refugee protest camp which was also the case for the aggressor. Afterwards supporters brought the text into the movement; it was translated into several languages and presented in the plenary of the protest camp. Generally speaking, activists at the camp were shocked to hear about it. Talks were being held and the result was that the protest camp writes a statement against sexism and in order to point out that this incident did not take place at the protest camp at Oranienplatz and the school.

The refugee movement and the fight against sexist structures

The aforementioned case of rape and the deficient support for the affected can be perceived as a part of a structural problem of sexism and sexualized violence against women* in the general society.

We regard rape and sexual assaults as experienced and therefore defined as such by the affected.

Since the beginning, we have tried hard to combat sexism – and also homophobia – in our movement. Male education and women* empowerment workshops have been organized, films have been shown, and countless women* and male allies have condemned sexist behaviour in open plenaries and individual encounters. The women space in the squatted school is an important achievement to empower women* to fight against sexism and sexualized violence and a relevant political sub-group in the movement. The women space now is a respected and uncontested part of the school.

At this point we want to further clarify our self-organized structure in order to make everyone understand how we operate as a public campaign in a public space.

The refugee protest movement is not personally bound. As opposed to closed political groups, the movement is very open. Everyone can take part one day and be gone the next day. This makes it very hard to establish awareness for sexism and the continuity of it.

The people involved in the movement are very heterogeneous. People have very different political orientations and reasons for why they take part. This makes it much harder to agree commonly on high standards without being often limited to the smallest common denominator, also with respect to how (not if to ) to fight sexism. But we are not closing our eyes towards sexual harassment. Women will find support in our movement because we are looking after each other in order not to let incidents of sexual violation happen within us.

Call for more solidarity in the fight against sexism and racism

Regarding the aforementioned structural difficulties of the movement to fight sexism and sexualized violence efficiently, we would like to strengthen our collaboration with (tpocq)- feminist and other critical political groups.

A constructive approach to counter sexism in the refugee movement needs to consider also the power of racism: it needs to acknowledge that the idea that male refugees are more sexist than other males is informed by hegemonic racist ideas which usually portray male refugees as rapists and criminals (e.g. in mainstream media (BILD)).

From the entire plenary of Oranienplatz and the women space of the squatted school.

Berlin, 24. Juli 2013
