Whether Pegida or State – burning homes are the fruits of their sowing
Over 3000 students from schools and universities took to the streets to protest against racism and fascism in Germany. The rally was initially led by people from Afghanistan who in alliance with the students protested for asylum rights. The students were convinced that it was very important for them to be on the streets and participate in the rally rather than to spend the day in the class room. One student who had grown up in Zambia and Ethiopia expressed that he had not witnessed such levels of racism in these African countries. Even though he had not experienced racism directly in Germany, he said that it was very important for him to be politically involved and protest against racism. The students used social media to organise and were happy with the successful turnout. The rally was also joined by anti-gentrification protestors. Songs in several languages streamed from the protest vans. The students chanted ‘Refugees are Welcome Here’ and ‘Antifacista’ demo chants. There were several speeches in German and the demonstration and the four hour long march ended in Mehringdamm.
