Insel 36 (Island 36) is a documentary by Aslı Özarslan about refugee protests in Berlin. For more than one year asylum seekers lived in tents on Oranienplatz to take a stand against isolation enforced upon them by german laws. Among them is only one woman, Napuli from Sudan – her objective: the change of asylum law. While some of the district’s residents do not want to have the refugees living in their neighborhood and politicans do not meet the refugees’ demands, Napuli tries to keep up spirits high.
Insel 36 (Island 36) is documenting Napulis fight for freedom, everyday life at the camp and shows her perspective on illegalized life. The film displays how dangerous it is for asylum seekers in Germany to claim their human rights.
