The great Senegalese writer Fatou Diome will reflect upon flight and migration from her own, literary, and articulate perspective. She will read from her work and at the same time open a space for reflection and discussion. In light of current incidents and the catastrophic way the rising number of deaths in the mediterranean sea have been dealt with, she will discuss ways of understanding migration as freedom and emacipation, offer ideas of what this means for the discussion on the refugee question and how we can work together to make an emancipated and free mobility for all reality.
Fatou Diome is an author, activist and scientist. She was born on Niodior, a small island situated in front of the Senegalese coast, in 1968, and was initially raised by her grandmother. Before she started her studies in Dakar, she lived with three foster families in different cities. In 1990, she met a French working in Senegal and followed him to France four years later after their marriage, where she experienced various forms of everyday racism. After her divorce, she started to study literature, financing her studies through cleaning jobs.
After a collection of short stories and a novella, she published her first novel, „Le Ventre de l’Atlantique“, in 2003, a book which erned her internationally fame over night. It won the LiBeraturpreis, the Prix des Hémisphères Chantal Lapicque and the Jugendbuchpreis der Jury der jungen Leser. She has since published eight books, taught at the University of Strasbourg and the pedagogical college Karlsruhe, and presented the literary show “Nuit blanche” on France 3. In her works, she intensively deals with issues of migration, flight, and racism, as well as the relation between Senegal and France.
The reading will take place in French and German. The discussion will be translated into German (English translation possible).
The German passages will be read by the actrice Sara Hiruth Zewde.
The event takes place as part of the project “Why We Are Here!? African Perspectives on Flight and Migration“ conducted by AfricAvenir e.V. in 2015/2016. In cooperation with ARU and Oplatz media Group.

Fatou Diome: “L’immigration vers l’Europe: liberté et émancipation!” – Lecture et discussion
“L’immigration c’est aussi des gens qui partent pour leur émancipation, qui partent au nom de leur liberté…qui partent pour des tas d’autres raisons”. Fatou Diome
Femme de lettres sénégalaise de renommée internationale, Fatou Diome posera son regard personnel, aiguisé et littéraire sur la question de l’exil et des migrations. Elle lira des extraits de ses œuvres et proposera un espace de discussion et de revendications politiques en écho aux évènements actuels, aux innombrables migrants qui succombent chaque jour en tentant de passer la Méditerranée et à la réponse catastrophique des autorités. Fatou Diome nous permettra de comprendre en quoi la migration est aussi un acte de liberté et d’émancipation et ce que cela signifie dans les débats actuels sur les causes de l’exil. Il s’agira aussi de comprendre comment nous engager en faveur d’une mobilité libre et émancipatrice pour tous.
Fatou Diome est écrivaine, activiste et chercheuse. En 2005, son premier roman Le Ventre de l’Atlantique lui octroie une reconnaissance immédiate, récompensée notamment par le LiBeraturpreis de Francfort-sur-le-Main. Elle poursuit ensuite ses publications, enseigne dans les universités de Strasbourg et de Karlsruhe, et anime sur France 3 l’émission culturelle “Nuit blanche”. Ses œuvres sont traversées par les thèmes de la fuite, de la migration et du racisme, ainsi que par la question des relations entre Sénégal et France.

Une manifestation dans le cadre de „Pourquoi nous sommes là !?“- Perspectives africaines sur la fuite et la migration”, un projet mené AfricAvenir pour la période 2015/16, en coopération avec ARU et Oplatz media Group.
